When the love you have is greater than the pain you feel, forgiveness happens.
Just like when the urge to pee is greater than your laziness, you walk to the comfort room and get things done and over with.
And I also remember reading in the past: Forgiveness happens when you give up hope that you can change the past.
Sometimes, enlightenment comes when I'm in the solitude of a cubicle. LOL
